{"id":17199,"date":"2018-10-30T09:25:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/?page_id=17199"},"modified":"2025-03-05T14:44:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T14:44:51","slug":"troubleshooting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/docs\/help-and-support\/troubleshooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Troubleshooting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This page explains solutions that you can incorporate for troubleshooting different issues on the SimScale Workbench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='workbench-errors' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"workbench-errors\">Workbench Errors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you come across any error on the Workbench while performing simulation and wish to dig deeper into the issue then look no further than our dedicated section for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/docs\/knowledge-base\/#event-log-warnings-and-errors\">warnings and errors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='browser-support' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"browser-support\">Browser Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SimScale officially supports the current versions of all major browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. A minimum screen resolution of <strong>1366&#215;768<\/strong> is also required, as well as a broadband Internet connection. We recommend using 100% zoom and default font sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='3d-viewer-problems' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d-viewer-problems\">3D Viewer Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On these pages you can test whether your browser supports 3D visualization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/check\">https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/check<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/webglreport.com\/?v=2\">https:\/\/webglreport.com\/?v=2<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the WebGL tests from above say that your browser doesn\u2019t have JavaScript enabled, please refer to the section&nbsp;<a href=\"#javascript-problems\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JavaScript (JS) problems<\/a> below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get specific help for your Operating system and browser:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/get.webgl.org\/troubleshooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/get.webgl.org\/troubleshooting\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are prompted with information in the viewer that your browser does not have WebGL enabled, refer to the WebGL not enabled section below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='webgl-not-enabled' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"webgl-not-enabled\">WebGL Not Enabled<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If WebGL is not receiving the data from our server, the reason is most likely that WebGL is either disabled or has crashed. Please try deleting the locally cached files and restart your browser. If you still have the same issues, please reset WebGL by following these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='chrome' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chrome\">Chrome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, make sure that hardware acceleration is enabled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <em>chrome:\/\/settings<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>\u2018System\u2019<\/strong> on the left side of the page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<em>System<\/em>&nbsp;section, ensure the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Use hardware acceleration when available&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;checkbox is checked (you\u2019ll need to relaunch Chrome for any changes to take effect).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then enable WebGL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <em>chrome:\/\/flags<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Disable WebGL&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;is not activated (you\u2019ll need to relaunch Chrome for any changes to take effect).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then inspect the status of WebGL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <em>chrome:\/\/gpu<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspect the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;WebGL2&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;item in the&nbsp;<em>Graphics Feature Status<\/em>&nbsp;list. The status will be one of the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Hardware accelerated<\/em> \u2014 WebGL is enabled and hardware accelerated (running on the graphics card).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable<\/em> \u2014 WebGL is enabled, but running in software. See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chromium.org\/developers\/design-documents\/gpu-accelerated-compositing-in-chrome#TOC-Appendix-B:-The-Software-Compositor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for more info: \u201cFor software rendering of WebGL, Chrome uses&nbsp;SwiftShader, a software GL rasterizer.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Unavailable<\/em> \u2014 WebGL is not available in hardware or software. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the status is not <em>Hardware accelerated<\/em>, then the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Problems Detected&#8217;<\/strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em>list (below the <em>Graphics Feature Status<\/em>&nbsp;list) may explain why hardware acceleration is unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"hw-block hw-note hw-note--warning hw-note\">\n    <div class=\"hw-note__title\">\n        <p class=\"hw-note__titleText\"><i class=\"fa fa-exclamation-circle\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>Warning<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"hw-note__body\">\n        <p>If your graphics card\/drivers are blacklisted, you can override the blacklist. This is <b>not<\/b> recommended! To override the blacklist:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Go to <i>chrome:\/\/flags<\/i><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Activate the<strong>&#8216;Override software rendering list&#8217;<\/strong> setting (you\u2019ll need to relaunch Chrome for any changes to take effect)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information, see: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/answer\/3098656?visit_id=1-636270756374406648-279355408&amp;rd=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chrome Help: WebGL and 3D graphics<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve tried all this and it still doesn\u2019t work, then there are some other things you could try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try <strong>Incognito<\/strong>&nbsp;mode. If that works, please try disabling extensions temporarily and enable them one by one to check which extension is causing the problem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re using an older version of Chrome there is the possibility that under certain settings WebGL is still not working. Try upgrading to the&nbsp;newest version&nbsp;of Chrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='firefox' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"firefox\">Firefox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, enable WebGL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <em>about:config<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search for <em>webgl.disabled<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that its value is <em>false<\/em> (any changes take effect immediately without relaunching Firefox)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then inspect the status of WebGL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <em>about:support<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspect the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;WebGL2 Driver Renderer&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;row in the&nbsp;<em>Graphics<\/em>&nbsp;table:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the status contains a graphics card manufacturer, model, and driver (eg: <em>\u201cNVIDIA Corporation \u2013 NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M OpenGL Engine\u201d<\/em>), then WebGL is enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the status is something like <em>\u201cBlocked for your graphics card because of unresolved driver issues\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cBlocked for your graphics driver version\u201d<\/em>, then your graphics card\/driver is blacklisted. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"hw-block hw-note hw-note--warning hw-note\">\n    <div class=\"hw-note__title\">\n        <p class=\"hw-note__titleText\"><i class=\"fa fa-exclamation-circle\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>Warning<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"hw-note__body\">\n        <p>If your graphics card\/drivers are blacklisted, you can override the blacklist. This is <b>not<\/b> recommended! To override the blacklist:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Go to <i>about:config<\/i><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Search for <i>webgl.force-enabled<\/i><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Set it to <b>&#8216;true&#8217;<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Like Chrome, Firefox has a&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Use hardware acceleration when available&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;checkbox, in&nbsp;<em>Preferences &gt; Advanced &gt; General &gt; Browsing<\/em>. However, unlike Chrome, Firefox does not require this checkbox to be checked for WebGL to work.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='post-processor-issues' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"post-processor-issues\">Post-Processor Issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post-processing component of the SimScale Workbench requires secure WebSockets support. In order to use the web-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/docs\/post-processing\/\">post-processor<\/a>, check if your browser supports secure WebSockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is valid for most modern browsers, including Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Edge. To test whether your web browser offers this support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/websocketstest.com\/\">https:\/\/websocketstest.com\/<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A message will be presented to you stating whether WebSockets are supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='javascript-js-problems' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"javascript-js-problems\">JavaScript (JS) Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the WebGL tests from above warn that your browser doesn\u2019t have JavaScript enabled, please refer to the following sections. If none of the proposed solutions work and you don\u2019t administer the system yourself, please contact your administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In any case, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your browser is up to date. In the <em>Help<\/em> menu, click on <strong>&#8216;Check for updates&#8217; <\/strong>and install if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you don\u2019t have add-ons installed which block JavaScript like <em>\u201c<\/em>No-Script<em>\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201c<\/em>QuickJava<em>\u201d<\/em>. These extensions will block JavaScript access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='firefox' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"firefox\">Firefox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the address bar, type \u201cabout:config\u201d (without quotation marks), and press Enter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the button <strong>&#8216;I\u2019ll be careful, I promise&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the search bar, search for \u201cjavascript.enabled\u201d (without quotation marks).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>View the result named \u201cjavascript.enabled\u201d and check if the setting is set to <strong>&#8216;true&#8217;<\/strong>. If not, right-click and click on <strong>&#8216;Toggle&#8217;<\/strong>. JavaScript is now enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the above steps don\u2019t work, please consider trying a different browser (e.g. Google Chrome)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='chrome' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chrome\">Chrome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>&#8216;Settings&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the panel on the left, again click <strong>&#8216;Settings&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to the bottom and click on <strong>&#8216;Advanced&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to <strong>&#8216;Privacy and security&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>&#8216;Content settings&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to <strong>&#8216;JavaScript&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure that the toggle for <strong>&#8216;Allowed (recommended)&#8217;<\/strong> is enabled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the above steps don\u2019t work, please consider trying a different browser (e.g. Firefox)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='browser-cache-problems' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"browser-cache-problems\">Browser Cache Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your browser crashes while loading a large mesh or CAD model, the cache might be to blame. In order to ensure a fast and responsive interaction with the 3D models on SimScale, they are partly loaded into the browser cache memory. Some browsers do limit the cache memory size, such that the application crashes as soon as this limit is reached. To solve the problem, first try to clean your browser cache or increase the cache limit. To clean your browser cache:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/answer\/2392709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clear Google Chrome Cache<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/en-US\/kb\/how-clear-firefox-cache\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clear Mozilla Firefox Cache<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you encounter unexpected behavior of the user interface (e.g. certain actions are not executed or you get error messages where you wouldn\u2019t expect them), please try clearing your browser cache as described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='operating-system-support' class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"operating-system-support\">Operating System Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SimScale works platform-independent on Windows, Linux (for example Ubuntu), and Mac OS. However, your graphics hardware and driver must support WebGL.
